with a respite from the heat in the tapestry room, which was air conditioned.
The ceiling in the map room was incredible (and the crowd was wall to wall).
The tour through the Vatican Museum ended in the Sistine Chapel (where we were packed in almost like sardines, and no photos allowed).
which was truly awesome. Some of the items that caught our eye were:
Dove of the Holy Spirit
Behind the Throne of Peter
Michelangelo’s Pietà (Mary and Jesus),
The incredible interior of the dome.
Saint Peter’s Square
After lunch at a nearby cafeteria we caught a cab to the Colosseum. We were early for our tour so we stopped at a restaurant for gelato. However, their selection of gelato wasn’t so good so Mary and Chloe had strawberries with whipped cream and Paul had a chocolate dessert of some sort.
Then it was time to catch our family tour of the Colosseum and the Forum. This group size was about double the size of the other two family tours we have taken so it was a bit slower and just didn’t seem quite as good as the others.
The Roman Colosseum
The tour had teams of kids. Chloe presented her team's findings from a learning game.
After tour we walked a very small part of the Roman Forum. There was a lot to see but by this time everyone was a little foot sore and getting tired…
so we caught a cab and ended up back near the Piazza Navona where we had dinner. We then walked to the hotel and had gelato near the room. The gelato was some of the best we had had in Italy. Too bad we didn’t find it the first day we were here.
Then it was to the hotel for showers (Rome is like a steam bath) and packing.
